Fall Highlights at the Geras Centre for Aging Research

This fall has been full of accomplishments, collaborations, and exciting research activity at Geras. Here are some key updates from across our community.

Trainee Success at MIRA & Labarge Knowledge Exchange

Congratulations to Elizabeth Zhou (1st Place – Master’s Poster Award) and Noorain Mamdani for their outstanding research achievements at the 2025 MIRA & Labarge Knowledge Exchange. Your dedication to advancing aging research makes us proud.

Welcoming Visiting Scholar Dr. Jasmine Mah

We were delighted to host Dr. Jasmine Mah, MD, PhD, from Dalhousie University. Dr. Mah works at the intersection of medicine, policy, and aging, and her visit sparked engaging discussions with our team.

Update in Geriatrics Marks 15 Years

More than 600 participants joined McMaster’s 15th Annual Update in Geriatrics, co-organized with the Regional Geriatric Program Central and Geras.
This year’s honourees:

Cognitive Groove

Cognitive Groove is a fun, music-based movement program combining rhythm, gentle exercise, and brain challenges to support physical and cognitive health.
We are currently recruiting adults aged 60 and older living with frailty at:

  • YMCA Les Chater (Hamilton)

  • Ron Edwards YMCA (Burlington)

  • Flamborough YMCA (Waterdown)

CALMA for Alzheimer’s

We are recruiting adults aged 60 and older living with Alzheimer’s disease for CALMA, a Phase 2 study testing IGC AD1, a medication made from THC and melatonin. The study aims to see whether it can help reduce agitation in individuals with mild to severe Alzheimer’s disease.

COMPASS ND

COMPASS ND is the flagship study of the Canadian Consortium on Neurodegeneration in Aging. It enrolls people with dementia or cognitive concerns and collects clinical, neuropsychological, MRI, and biological data to advance brain health research.
