20 Years of the Ontario Osteoporosis Strategy

Celebrating 20 Years of the Ontario Osteoporosis Strategy

Twenty years ago, the Ontario Osteoporosis Strategy (OOS) was launched with a bold vision: to set a global standard for innovation in bone health for older adults.

At its inception, Dr. Alexandra Papaioannou served as the founding external chair, working alongside a team of leading osteoporosis experts to shape and steer this transformative provincial initiative. Together, they laid the groundwork for a program dedicated to reducing fragility fractures and enhancing bone health across Ontario.

Since 2005, they have been dedicated to reducing fractures and enhancing bone health across the province. Over the past 15 years, they have achieved a remarkable 14.6% decrease in the age-standardized rate of hip fractures.

Today, the OOS continues to lead with evidence-based tools and approaches that are making a real difference in clinical practice, particularly in primary care and long-term care settings.
