Update in Geriatrics celebrates 15 years of collaboration and excellence
McMaster University’s 15th Annual Update in Geriatrics, organized by the Division of Geriatric Medicine, the Regional Geriatric Program Central, and the Geras Centre for Aging Research, offers access to expert speakers and provides a valuable networking opportunity. This year’s milestone event took place virtually on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, with over 600 registrants in attendance from across Canada and around the world.
To celebrate the dedication and excellence of professionals working in geriatrics in our region, the Update in Geriatrics Planning Committee recognizes outstanding contributions through annual awards. The prestigious Lifelong Achievement Award is awarded to exceptional leaders who have served over adults – previous awardees include Dr. Anthony Kerigan (2022), Patricia Mandy (2023), and Brenda Flaherty (2024). This year, the honour was presented to Dr. Paul O’Byrne, Dean and Vice-President of the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University. An internationally recognized expert in asthma, Dr. O’Byrne has authored over 500 peer-reviewed publications and is a sought-after conference speaker worldwide. His work has shaped the understanding and treatment of respiratory diseases, improving countless lives.
Dr. O’Byrne has been a cherished ally in the field of geriatrics, making a dedicated effort to introduce each year’s Update in Geriatrics with his witty and engaging remarks. He has generously offered mentorship and support to members of the Division of Geriatric Medicine and the broader Hamilton community, helping to shape and sustain vital programming. Dr. O’Byrne’s legacy is not only one of scientific excellence, but of compassion, mentoring and unwavering dedication to improving the lives of others.
In 2023, the Clinical Excellence Award was introduced to recognize outstanding geriatric care in the region. This year, Dr. Esther Coker and Shari Duxbury were awarded the Clinical Excellence award by the Update in Geriatrics Planning Committee.
