Dr. Cowan obtained his BA (Hons) in Economics from Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario in 1985 and a Master of Industrial Relations from Queen’s University in 1987.  Dr. Cowan attended McMaster Medical School and completed his Internal Medicine Fellowship in 1996 and Geriatric Medicine Fellowship in 1997 (both at McMaster).

He is an Associate Professor Department of Medicine (Division of Geriatric Medicine) at McMaster University and a consultant at St. Joseph’s Healthcare and Hamilton Health Sciences, Hamilton, Ontario. His areas of research interest include perioperative care of the elderly, diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease, mechanisms of Alzheimer’s Disease. He has published a meta-analysis on drug treatments and Alzheimer disease as well as being involved in multicenter drug treatment trials.

Dr. Cowan is presently an Investigator in a study examining bone aluminum content in Alzheimer’s patients and recently published a study examining immune mechanisms in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer-like Disease in transgenic mice. He is an investigator in the Hip ATTACK study to determine the advantage of accelerated operative care in hip fracture patients and the HipVISION study examining the outcomes of elderly hip fracture patients. Dr Cowan is the local principal investigator in “NeuroVISION”, a study examining the prevalence and impact of occult perioperative strokes in the elderly.

His education interests include Cognitive Testing where he teaches a cognitive testing workshop as part of the “Geriatric Certificate Program” accredited by McMaster University as well as being a board member of the Advanced Gerontological Education Inc. and has played a role in the development of the GPA curriculum from its inception.
